Aims

The Green Card system, which currently has 47 members, was created in 1949 following a recommendation by the UN Economic Commission for Europe with the aim of:

  • facilitating international traffic by avoiding the need for motorists from a member country visiting other member countries to take out an insurance policy every time they cross a border, provided that they are insured in their own country.
  • guaranteeing that victims of traffic accidents caused by a motorist from a member country are compensated according to the rules governing compulsory motor liability insurance in the country where the accident took place.
